" We architects can contribute significantly to the alleviation of poverty and provide solutions relevant to the issues of today.  This is what we have been trained for and this is what we stand for."   UIA President Gaetan Siew

On June 1 A4A changed name to "Article 25, Development and Disaster Relief".

The 25th Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the only article which refers to the built environment. It states that adequate shelter and housing are a fundamental human right.

Since forming in January 2006 Architects for Aid (A4A) provided more than architecture. The skills of the professionals working on the projects come from across the built environment professions: engineers, surveyors, project managers and others. To reflect the human rights ethos behind what we do and this wider range of projects and skills, the name is changing on June 1 2008.

"'Since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 (Article 25), the right to adequate shelter has been recognized as an important component of the right to an adequate standard of living. Despite this it is estimated that over 1 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe shelter and a healthy living environment....how do we define shelter? Who is responsible for providing shelter? How can current proccesses of shelter development shift to become more socially equitable?"  (Builders without Borders)

The previous webiste address will remain active and the new website is www.article-25.org.  Email addresses will change to first-last@article-25.org but we will keep old addresses active for a while to assist the changeover. Please use the A4A addresses until further notice so we can be sure the change has propagated effectively.

T-Shirts by Paul Smith for Article 25

In support of the new name of the charity, legendary designer Sir Paul Smith has designed a T-shirt just for article[25]!  Be the first to sport the exclusive design to be retailed at £39 and support the charity of the built environment. EMAIL your advance order to info@a-4-a.org. The design is supporting the rebranding and launched to coincide with this and a[25]'s participation as an Official Charity of The London Festival of Architecture/Architecture week.

"In a world which continues to witness terrible disasters, article[25] is a charity which is doing wonderful work.  The T-shirt design is an abstract composition of angles and lines.  It relates to the new branding of the charity and the image of architecture week,”  Paul Smith, May 08
